Project Manager, Solar Development & Construction
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Project Manager is responsible for the comprehensive lifecycle management of multiple utility-scale and distributed generation renewable energy projects. This role bridges the gap between initial development and final operation, owning the project from post-sale handoff through due diligence, permitting, engineering, physical construction, and transition to Operations and Maintenance (O&M). The successful candidate will ensure all projects meet established scope, budget, schedule, and safety requirements while acting as the primary point of contact for all internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Planning & Development (Pre-Construction)
- Manage the full pre-construction lifecycle, including due diligence, site assessments, and early-stage engineering.
- Develop and implement comprehensive, logic-based project schedules (NTP and beyond) and detailed work plans.
- Drive the complex permitting process across various jurisdictions, coordinating with utilities and townships to ensure full regulatory compliance.
- Facilitate the seamless hand-off from the engineering/procurement phase to the physical construction phase.
2. Engineering & Technical Oversight
- Manage internal and external engineering teams to ensure designs adhere to specifications, industry standards, and project goals.
- Oversee engineering and procurement schedules to keep projects on track.
- Review and maintain key contracts, ensuring technical and commercial alignment.
3. Financial Management & Procurement
- Develop, monitor, and maintain detailed project development and construction budgets.
- Report detailed analytics to explain variances against budget and schedule to leadership.
- Create bid packages, analyze vendor bids, negotiate contracts, and manage procurement for long-lead items.
- Collaborate with estimators and installation partners to obtain accurate cost estimates.
4. Construction Management & Field Oversight
- Oversee the entire construction process to ensure projects remain on budget and schedule while reducing turnover time.
- Act as the Owner’s Representative during physical construction, making day-to-day decisions and ensuring safety culture is enforced at the project level.
- Conduct quality control and ensure all project turnover documentation is secured and filed in a timely, orderly manner.
5. Stakeholder Management & Reporting
- Serve as the primary liaison between customers, contractors, vendors, landowners, regulators, and utility partners.
- Manage Project Coordinators to ensure accurate system updates and documentation.
- Prepare and provide scheduled status reports, identifying risks and proposing mitigation strategies to key stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required (Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred).
- Experience: 5+ years of project management or construction experience, specifically managing the development phase of complex projects in the solar/renewable energy sector.
- Technical Skills: * Strong understanding of engineering principles, permitting processes, and utility interconnection.
- Expertise in project scheduling software (MS Project, Smartsheet, or Primavera P6).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and project management platforms (Procore, BOX).
- Communication: Exceptional oral and written communication skills for client management and internal reporting.
- Aptitude: Detail and results-oriented; ability to identify discrepancies, perform independent research/analysis, and recommend corrective actions in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- PMP Certification.
- Experience with solar energy project financing and technical due diligence.
- In-depth knowledge of renewable energy incentives (RECs, ITC) and state-specific policies.
- Proven ability to manage a portfolio of projects simultaneously across different geographical regions.

- Provide regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform all essential job functions safely without posing a direct threat to yourself or others.
- Ability to work extended hours and travel to project sites as required.
